Find trendy children’s clothing for winter at these Long Island shops

Shopping for children’s clothes isn’t a one-store-fits-all deal. Some kids, along with their parents, like the latest trends, while others are into tradition. Some go for monograms, while others look for sustainable brands. Across Long Island, children’s boutiques specialize in those areas and more.

“I’m very into fashion, and love being able to share that when I give gifts,” says Garden City mom Angela DiLemme, 47, who has a 16-year-old daughter and shops locally for her young nieces and nephews. “I always try to find clothing stores with special items.”

Offerings with one-of-a-kind flair make the children’s boutiques on our shopping guide tick. Use it as you make your shopping list — and check it twice.

Small Business Saturday 2021 in Indianapolis: Where, how to shop

Holiday shopping season is around the corner, and local businesses are gearing up to greet shoppers.

This year’s sales are once again crucial as small business face a second year of survival during the pandemic. Supply chain issues and logistical bottlenecks are plaguing both big box retailers and local businesses. And in one survey by American Express, 78% of business owners said holiday sales will impact their ability to stay in business in 2022.

Christmas trees, sweaters, gifts in shipping mess:How supply chain issues will affect holiday shopping

With “Small Business Saturday,” communities push to support local shops during the busy holiday season. The movement predates the pandemic, with American Express helping launch it in 2010. It’s on the Saturday after Black Friday, so this year it falls on Saturday, Nov. 27.

If you’re looking to shop local and support independent businesses this year, here’s what you need to

How to Beat the Elements in Norway? Shop.

Surrounded by mountains and fjords on Norway’s west coast, Bergen is among the rainiest cities in Europe. But locals will tell you that what’s worse than the rain is the wind.

“It’s the umbrella’s graveyard,” said Karine Trellevik Lunde, a fashion designer who moved to Bergen 12 years ago from Norway’s east coast, where the climate is colder but less windy.

Dressing fashionably in the gusting rain can prove challenging, Ms. Lunde said, so she eventually teamed up with Ros-Mari Tobiassen Gaundal, a fellow Bergen transplant with a business background, to start the outerwear brand BRGN.

“We both were struggling to find clothes that could protect us from the Bergen weather without looking very sporty,” she said.

The first BRGN collection was ready in 2016, and it was quickly picked up by independent shops across Norway. Ms. Lunde said their idea was to create rainwear that doesn’t look like

Tapping Indigenous Talent in Colombia to Create Modern Fashion

Mark A. Carlson

On the world stage, Colombian fashion has become well known for its sophisticated use of hand-wrought ancestral techniques, from weaving and embroidery to beading. It is not uncommon to see a brightly colored Mochila bag — a staple accessory for most Colombians — or a typical palm straw hat on international catwalks or being worn by A-list celebrities.

With its Spanish Colonial mansions draped in bougainvillea and its centuries-old cobblestone streets, the walled city of Cartagena, on the country’s Caribbean coast, is an enchanting place to shop for a range of high-quality handmade accessories crafted by Colombia’s many artisan communities.

“While we still have a great tradition of artisans carrying on heritage handicrafts, we also have an amazing new school of designers incorporating these techniques into more modern designs,” said Cristina Consuegra, co-founder of Galavanta, a local travel company that curates personalized shopping experiences from high-end boutiques to family-owned

Gainesville shops prepare for small Business Saturday, local support

Mark A. Carlson

Just two streets over from her childhood home in southeast Gainesville, Keisha McArthur runs Diva Kouture Boutique, a women’s fashion shop filled with bright pink walls, hand-selected clothing and colorful accessories.

It is one of the only fashion shops available in that part of town, according to the 47-year-old business owner, and it meets a need for women of all shapes and skin colors who want a unique outfit that won’t accidentally twin with something from a national chain at the mall.

But McArthur’s success is not just in boosting her customers’ confidence. As a Black female entrepreneur, her business inspires girls and women of color and fills a niche in the community that larger, more distant stores do not.

“One of my biggest goals was not only have my own boutique, but I would definitely love to open my business where I came from,” McArthur said. “And the significance

The SIL Taps Texas Designers for an Exclusive Holiday Collection

Mark A. Carlson

The SIL (an acronym for “Stuff I Love”) offers exclusive pieces that can’t be found anywhere else — even on the internet. Natalie Bloomingdale launched the online shop in 2017 to share all of her favorite things, one of which happened to be the works of philanthropic Dallas designer Tish Cox. Since then, The SIL seal of approval has carried significant weight for under-the-radar labels. So when Bloomingdale tapped a slew of beloved Texas brands for her latest holiday collection, it’s clear cause for a Ranch Water toast.

Each year, Bloomindale partners with a brand that inspires her (past collabs include the Beverly Hills Hotel and The Future Perfect). This year’s pick: Charleston-based lifestyle publication Garden & Gun. Together, the brands have launched The SIL Fieldshop, showcasing artisan clothing line Mi Golondrina (Dallas), luxury apparel brand Tish Cox (Dallas), and Hayden Lasher’s luxe Italian handbags (Houston).

After its grand re-opening in August, Forever Young Boutique expands its clothing collection to women and college students

Amanda Hughes remembers strolling down the streets of downtown Muncie when she was little, peeking through cracked windows, counting boarded-up buildings and watching her hometown wear away.

“I grew up at a [time] where downtown was a ghost town,” Hughes said.

As Hughes grew up and graduated from Muncie Southside High School, she began working in retail. After five years of retail experience at Kohl’s, Hughes attended Anderson University and graduated in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in business.

In 2013, Hughes packed up and moved to Fishers, Indiana, to have a family with her husband, Brandon Hughes, where they lived for two years. In Fishers, Hughes said she knew her “old soul” always held onto downtown Muncie. That hold later guided her back to the home of her own boutique, Forever Young.

“We opened [Forever Young Boutique] because, when [my husband and I] had kids, we were shopping at

United Way of Reno County hosts Shop Local Give Local

Mark A. Carlson

Memorial Hall in downtown Hutchinson bustled with shoppers visiting various booths filled with 14 local boutiques from Reno County on Nov. 9. Later in the evening, the lights dimmed to showcase Hutchinson fashion.

Community members were encouraged to get involved with their community through the United Way of Reno County.

Giving back to the community

The United Way partnered with local boutiques to showcase local businesses the region supports. The evening began with refreshments, snacks and open shopping, followed by a fashion show displaying the clothes the local boutiques sell and ended with an announcement from United Way thanking the attendees.

Executive director of United Way of Reno County, Lisa Gleason said this idea came from a minor event from past years. However, since Amy Kraft from Kraft Electric joined the United Way as campaign co-chair this year, she decided to make it larger. Gleason said they plan to

They’re also in charge of promoting the store. Instead of traditional advertising, Pout attracts almost all of its customers through word of mouth or Instagram.

Larson is in charge of pricing, and Burkhart said one of the store’s main goals is to keep prices reasonable. That way, customers will want to shop local.

“I definitely think Scottsbluff needs something like this just because we don’t have a variety, really, and I think there’s a need for women’s clothing besides just Target and Walmart,” Celeste Salazar, a customer shopping at Pout, said.

She found out about the store online and said she was drawn in by the decor and selection of clothing.

Construction on Pout began in the summer but there is still some work to be done. A sign for the store will be added in the near future.

Opening the store required a lot of research, Burkhart said.
