The Empties Edition: Discovering a really nice hydrating serum amidst the empty bottles

Mark A. Carlson
I’ve been sticking to my resolve to use up products as much as I can, without leaving too many half-opened jars and bottles lying around. The only way I know if a product works for my skin, or if I love it, is if I’m able to finish it.

Better yet, I finish it, and yearn for a new bottle or jar! 😀

Here are some of my recent empties, because everyone loves a post about empties 😉

Chanel Sublimage Gel to Oil Cleanser

This is quite easily one of my favourite Chanel Sublimage products, and it’s also one of the more affordable and better value! 😀

I love the large tube, that fits a generous 150ml of product, and it’s easy to handle.

The product is a lush, luxurious opaque gel, that you massage on your skin, upon which it softens to an oil texture. It emulsifies easily, and rinses off, leaving skin feeling clean and soft.

I love that it does not dry out my skin the way most oil cleansers do, and it takes off light makeup like a charm. For me, it removes sunscreen easily, and does not clog my pores even if I use it twice a day to ensure my skin is clean, especially after sweating.

In the evening, I usually follow up with a second cleanser, but in the morning, I don’t. There’s no residue on my skin, and it just feels so soft and clean! Best of all, you don’t even need very much, which means that a tube does last quite a long time.

If I was tasked to use only 1 first cleanse product for the rest of my life, this one’s a strong contender (but I do have other faves, so there’s no way I could only use 1 product for the rest of my life LOL! 😛 )

L’Occitane Almond Shower Oil

The L’Occitane Almond Shower Oil is a personal luxury treat in the shower. I think I’ve been using it off and on since 2012, which means that it’s been over 10 years now! 🙂

I love the luxurious feel, and the sweet almond scent that envelops you in the hot shower. The texture of the shower oil is thick, but instantly transforms into a milky body wash that cleans you up and leaves your skin soft from the oils.

I usually use it as I would any regular body wash, directly on wet skin, although I know of people who shower first, then use the shower oil as a final rinse to soften and moisturise the skin.

Lest you think it leaves the bathroom floor sticky, it doesn’t. It emulsifies on contact with water, and doesn’t leave any residue on your skin or the floor.

READ THE FULL REVIEW: It is quite a luxury treat, so I keep a bottle in the shower and use it sparingly so it lasts as long as it can! Also comes in refill packs for better value.

Filorga Time-Filler Absolute Wrinkle Correction Cream

I just shared my review on this Filorga cream that I absolutely love!

While I don’t have visible deep wrinkles or lines to correct, I credit this cream with keeping my skin feeling and looking firm and elastic (for my age). I wouldn’t recommend this for anyone who is in their blush of youth, which means anyone under the age of 30. Only consider this when 35 and up, or if you’re already experiencing sagging skin/lines before that (wear sunscreen everyday, it helps a lot to keep your skin youthful!)

I use this cream in the day, and it works beautifully for my dry skin. Doesn’t feel heavy nor greasy at all.

I was sad to use up the last bit, but I just found out that there’s a new version – Time-Filler 5XP. Seems to work the same way, with a new and improved formula.

Evolve Beauty Multi-Peptide 360 Moisture Cream

I tried to make this jar of moisturiser last as long as I could, so it was with a sad heart that I scooped out the final bits of it from the lovely amber jar a few weeks ago.

This is quite easily one of my favourite moisturisers I have used to date, and during the recent Black Friday sales, I instantly grabbed myself another jar! 😀

The moisturiser is simple, but so effective especially for dry skin. I love the texture, which is rich yet lightweight, and it sinks right into my skin beautifully. I usually use it at night, and it makes a wonderfully lush buffer for days when I use a retinol.

I love that my skin feels so soft and moisturised, and now that it’s gone, I truly feel the void. It’s no wonder therefore that I now have a fresh new jar waiting for me to break into very soon! 😀

Timeless Hyaluronic Acid + Vitamin C Serum

I found this one in my stash one day, and decided to use it up before it expired. I can’t even remember when I bought it LOL! 😛 Incidentally, I used to buy Timeless directly from their official website, but they don’t ship to us in Malaysia anymore, so the best place I’ve found to get Timeless skincare is from Worthee Cosmetics.

I am generally a fan of Timeless skincare products (the 20% Vitamin C serum is still the stuff of legends in my books!) so I had high expectations for this serum.

I use a hyaluronic acid or hydrating serum in the mornings, and also a Vitamin C serum. The Timeless Hyaluronic Acid serum has 5% Vitamin C included, which is kind of nice. Does it function as a 2-in-1 product? Well, not quite in my books.

The texture is lovely and delightfully light, sinking quickly into skin. I use a full dropper each time, and it does do a lovely job at making my skin feel moist, and keeping it that way as most hyaluronic acid serums do. As a hydrating serum, I have no complaints about its performance.

Timeless says that the Vitamin C will help brighten skin and provide anti-aging properties, which is accurate. However, I wouldn’t depend on just this, as the percentage is a little low. I use a Vitamin C serum alongside, or sometimes on top, so I’m not able to judge if this does brighten skin at all on its own.

That said however, I am confident in the quality of Timeless skincare, that I would trust their claims, perhaps for someone who does not normally use a Vitamin C serum, or who doesn’t want to use separate products.

For me, this is a nicely little top-up to the Vitamin C I usually use, and it’s hydrating, which is the key consideration for me. I’d definitely repurchase this down the road, as a hydrating serum. I’d used up every last drop so you can take my word that I thoroughly enjoyed it 🙂

Murad Vita-C Glycolic Brightening Serum

Speaking of Vitamin C, I just pumped out the last bit of the Murad Vitamin C serum, so I included it into the list.

I did enjoy using it very much, which you can read about in my complete review. However, I found that as with all double-chambered serums, towards the end, you just end up with uneven portions of serum pumped out. Sometimes all you get is from one side, sometimes, from the other, or you get one side finishing first, as the quantity of product is less.

For this reason, as much as I enjoyed using the Murad Vitamin C serum, I will not repurchase as I find these sort of packaging too gimmicky.

Allie UV Nuance Rose Chaire Sunscreen

I am a huge fan of Allie sunscreen for daily use, as long as I don’t spend too much time outside. When I do, I opt for a mineral sunscreen as I’ve found it protects my skin best. But for times when I’m just staying in, or if you’re in an office for most of the day, the Allie sunscreens cannot be beat for value and quality.

I tried the UV Nuance Rose Chaire sunscreen a while ago, but I believe it’s been reformulated. Japanese brands like to reformulate their sunscreens very regularly, so it’s very hard to keep up. But I have been informed that the ingredients list of this one remains largely unchanged despite the change in name to Allie Chrono Beauty Tone Up.

It is tinted pink, which helps brighten skin, and serves as a very serviceable makeup base, or to just lightly brighten the complexion. I usually just wear it on its own as I don’t wear much makeup now.

As far as sunscreen goes, I think it’s pretty decent. It isn’t greasy nor does it sit on top of the skin. It is not heavy, and it makes a nice makeup base. However, I’m not sure I’d repurchase, as I feel that it doesn’t protect my skin as well as their regular one. If I were going into the office and wearing makeup often, then this would be definitely be the one I’d consider.

Have you emptied any of your skincare products lately?

I’m quite pleased that I’m doing well in my resolve. That isn’t to say however, that I don’t abandon some things halfway, when they either don’t work, or just bore me 😛 Yes, it happens!
